The coolest new international book club has just launched: introducing, the Kiwis in Climate book club!
This month, members of Kiwis in Climate in Aotearoa and around the world met up in-person and virtually to discuss our first climate read.
We chose Is a River Alive by Robert Macfarlane, which argues that rivers are not just matter for human use, but living beings – who should be recognised as such in both imagination and law.
Of course, this idea isn’t novel for New Zealanders, especially those who hail from the Whanganui - which was referenced in the very first pages of the book.
Members engaged in lively discussions about how Is a River Alive influenced their personal and work lives while they were reading, whether the core arguments stood up to the New Zealand context, and the epic waitlist at Auckland Library.
Our London regional hub won the prize for the most engaged book club members, meeting up over a drink for an in-person chat.
On a sunny Spring day, it wasn’t hard to convince them to get to the pub! Other members shared stories and photos from their reading spots in New York, Wellington, Northland and Santa Fe.
A huge thanks to member James Heath, who leads our book club group.
Our next pick is Orbital by Samantha Harvey. Get reading, KiCers!
