In August 2026 the Government confirmed it would direct the Ministry of Education to reinstate the words "climate change," along with related terms such as "greenhouse gases" and "fossil fuels," into the Years 0–10 Science and Social Sciences curriculums, after their removal from the final documents. A working group of KiC members wrote to the Minister of Education, copying the Prime Minister and the Minister of Climate Change, to welcome that decision and to make the case that how the review is carried out matters just as much as the decision to undertake it.

The letter focuses on the risk that the review becomes a find-and-replace exercise. Reinserting the term in a handful of places, without connecting it coherently to its causes, its human origins and its consequences, leaves the underlying problem in place. We ask that the review instead build a progressive understanding across Years 0–10, treat climate change as a cross-curricular topic rather than confining it to one learning area, make resilience, adaptability and problem-solving explicit learning outcomes, support outdoor and nature-based teaching as a way into core literacy and numeracy, consult employers and industry alongside educators on the literacy the future workforce will need, and publish the outcome of the review.
